I'm afraid the "pie in the sky" idea that the "information age"
would be the golden economic age (where people can idle away the
hours in leisure while a handful work) just isn't going to happen.

All empires have their apex afterwhich comes decline. America and the
West are in decline. From the early 1900s until around 1960, it was
full steam ahead. 60 years isn't bad, it's no Roman Empire, or even
British Empire, but not bad for modern times. The West has ruled the
world for the last 500 years. In each era, there are those countries
that possess the right characteristics to allow them to get to the
top.
Telescopes; 1950s and 60s, Tasco, Unitron, Cave, Starliner, Questar.
1970s, Celestron, Star Liner, Cave, Parks.
1980s, Meade. 1990s, the low-end foreign offerings, lesser domestics
and Meade. 2000s, Foreign companies and maybe Meade, for awhile. I
left out the crap purveyors like Bushnell
although they obviously have big shares of the lower markets.
Remember that Tasco at it's apex sold some decent scopes.
