The really good news is that you can now get a Rebel for peanuts. Even the
modified ones are now available cheap on the used market.

It's a _super_ way to get started in astro-imaging without dedicating to
astro-imaging only.

As has been stated. For a beginning imager, these are an excellent choice.
There are so many other issues to work out in getting good astro-images,
that the camera is the last thing one should start spending a lot of money
on up front. Being able to purchase DSLR that is modified for astro, and is
still useful for day use, is the best thing to happen in a long time for the
budding astrophotographer. You can learn everything you need to know about
astro-imaging a lot faster than you'd learn with film. If for no other
reason than getting immediate results. Once you have the kinks worked out of
your imaging platform, there's no reason you can't try film, and/or move on
to CCD.
