Actually, the original Athlon crushed the Intel offering of
the time in FP (good for 3d graphics). The PIII at the time
were a bit better in integer.
Today, Intel's offerings are stronger in FPU (due to the way
they pipeline), but lose in integer. (But, on a strict MHz/MHz
comparison, the Athlon XP still wins in FPU)
For me, it comes down to price/performance. When I built my
Athlon 750 system, it was a no brainer. The Athlon was superior
in most every aspect to the PIII, was unlocked, and was cheaper
to boot. (I ran it most of the time at 850MHz)
When I upgraded the system, I chose the Athlon XP 2500 (Barton core),
because it was cheaper than the equivalent Pentium IV, and I could be
reasonably sure it would OC to 3200 (2.2 GHz)
I was also a little put off by Intel's strategy of "dumbing down" the
processor, having it do less per clock cycle, in order to ramp up the
GHz. They knew that on a clock for clock basis, they couldn't win. So,
make it run a 3GHz, and consumers will think it's faster. Nevermind
that the AMD 2GHz processor does just as much as fast, the ignorant
masses won't know that. They'll just know the Intel CPU is 1GHz faster.
