Don't confuse x86 with Intel. There have been x86 clones for almost as
long as there have been Intel x86 processors. The AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 is
about 25% faster than the PowerPC G5 in integer math.

Of course, floating point is different. The G5 is about 50% faster than
the FX-55 in floating point math.

The other offering of Intel, the Itanium 2 (which is not an x86 chip at
all) is faster than the G5 as well, in both types of math (and at a lower
clock speed), but slower in integer math (by a fair amount) than AMD's
FX-55.

I don't much care what chips Apple uses. I like the hardware design
overall, but their insistence on keeping it proprietary killed my interest
(and that of many developers).
