Try as I may, I cannot find the English equivalent to this function in
any other book on astronomical programming.  Some help would be
appreciated.

If this is unique to the programming style of the original programmer,
I would be interested in knowing what advantages or disadvantages it
has over a more traditional method.

I'm curious. Why do you want to translate the French in a software program? The software should run on any qualified compiler or interpreter as written. Is it just interest on your part in how the algorithm works? Or are you debugging a software failure in this section?
