Greetings Group
Last night I managed to find and actually see Tempel1 in my 5" f/8 refractor
at 50x. The comet is very dim and diffuse. I was surprised actually how
diffuse it was in the eyepiece. Moments of great seeing allowed resolution
of a nucleus. Seeing was 9/10 or better. Two friends were present---one with
a 12" DOB and the other an 8" reflector on EQ mount. Both were able to
locate and see the same independently---the DOB was much better than my view
in terms of brightness but I had a slight edge for detail. It was nearly
centered and below HIP 65928 & 65923. I have been trying since last Friday
to see it and was finally successful last night.
I would encourage and new observers to get a chart and try to find it---even
if it takes hours or days. This "quest" has really sharpened my observing
skills and made me a much better observer. I learned to pay more attention
to star patterns, be more patient and to look deeper. After the success, I
was amazed how easy other targets were to find and how big and bright other
objects seemed to be! M80 looked huge and bright by comparison---of course,
it is---but in relative proportion to the comet M80 appeared VERY
impressive.
