I won't go any more deeply into the Intel-AMD thing, suffice to say
that anyone who has watched Intel over the past 16 years knows what
they are.
I hate to break it to a novice like yourself, but the C-M merger
talked about was only the last of a few "attempts" that were either
tried or contemplated by Meade and Celestron during many years of
INCOMPETENT management on Celestron's part. The fact they had to
bring back Tom Johnson out of desperation a decade ago is testament to
the fact they just did not know what they were doing.
I loved Celestron way back. The were revolutionary. In the late
1970s, many amateur's main goal was to own a Celestron SCT. For me,
ownership of my first one came as a result of not having enough money
at the time to keep up with the inflating prices of Quantum
telescopes, the C8 was my second choice. But had I not made it, it's
unlikely I'd have become such a fan of deepsky observing because the
8" aperture (as opposed to the 4" of the Quantum I wanted) allowed me
to see deepsky objects from Toronto suburbs in detail. I'll always
have a soft-spot for Celestron-Pacific, the original C8, my 9.25"
Ultima, my Ultima 11."
Originally, I was anti-Meade. I considered them to be inferior
upstarts and they were, at first. Both companies produced lots of
junk in the cometary heyday of the 1980s, but both overcame that and
Meade started offering more advanced products. Lets face it; The
original "goto" C8 was no match for the LX-200s. Gradually, I came to
see Meade as the "engine" of amateur astronomy. Although I continued
to buy both products.
