What is a logaritmic image? Are they lowballing us by saying that the camera isn't actually working properly?

Not at all. They are presenting it as a logarithmic image because it allows the full dynamic range of their camera to be shown on the early release images. Seems like by far the best option to me given the inherent uncertainty in how bright the hot spot would be.
I would much rather see the full dynamic range image in logarithmic mode than a simple minded linear transformed version where either all shadow detail is lost or all highlights are burnt out.
Almost every image that you see has been subject to some form of non-linear transformation of the luminosity. The original raw data will be used for the quantitative science, but very high dynamic range data does not look good either on print media or on consumer video monitors. They have to do something like this to render the data accessible to the public.
