Read between the lines. What it actually says is that by carefully washing Martian soil and tweaking it with the right nutrients they expect to be able to grow GM marked mustard on Mars.


This is hardly newsworthy. You can grow the stuff on almost any substrate provided that it isn't actually phytotoxic. They also do not claim to be doing it at Martian atmospheric pressure, but only with the same ratios of the gasses (AFAICT). Again this isn't new or novel.

I expect soft plants to dessicate far too easily in sunlight on Mars. A few extreme high altitude xerophytes like cacti or succulents with very waxy coats and high salt tolerance might stand a chance though.

Methinks their PR department worked overtime hyping this story...
