The implication is that you can't do astronomy without a scope. Buy some
constellation identification books. Just enjoy the stars at first. If you have
binoculars, use those. Depending upon their aperture, you can see many deep-sky
objects with binoculars. 10x50 and 8x42 binoculars (sizes I own) show all of
the deep-sky objects plotted in the monthly star maps in Astronomy and Sky &
Telescope. My 10x50 binoculars show almost all of the "M" objects. The objects
are often tiny -- no Hubble-like views here -- but you can enjoy the thrill of
identifying them, and you'll learn the sky, too.
