I realize I may have given a false impression. I stand
by my assertions that:
1. If you're strapped for cash, you can buy a fine setup
for $500 including all the extras. But you'll have to
shop carefully, and you probably will have to make
some compromises.
2. If you're not strapped for cash, you should probably
figure on spending at least $1000 once you tote up
all the expenditures for the first year or two.
However, that doesn't mean that any beginner who spends
more than $1000 is making a mistake. For instance, if you
love computerization and you think that astrophotography
might be in your future, it might well make sense to start
out with a fully computerized 8-inch SCT. In that case,
your initial expenditures will likely be more like the
$3000 that somebody else cited.
