The issue with long exposure is to do with the mount and tracking system
rather than the type of Telescope. The main issue with a Newt is that they
are often optimised for visual use - i.e they have a much smaller secondary
mirror than the comparable SCT. This is great for visual contrast but means
that the size of the fully illuminated field is quite small (not an issue
with imaging planets of course). I would guess that for astrophotography
with a Newt you would ideally use a bigger secondary mirror than is usual
for visual work. Another factor is that Newt's generally dont have much
focus travel compared an SCT, so it might take a bit of fiddling around to
get the Newt to focus at the right position for your camera's sensor or
film. Much depends on the specific type of astrophotography you are doing.
Probably the most versatile type of scope as far as astrophotography goes
is an APO refractor but a big aperture in one of those is also BIG $$$$.
