Blaine, you asked about companies making decent dobs today. If you're
looking for a good 8-10" solid tube dob, then check out Discovery,
Orion, or some of the imports (DSH or Hardin, GS, Sky-watcher or
Antares, etc.)
Discovery is an amazing choice in achieving excellent quality at a
reasonable price.
I, too, had a Coulter 10" at one point... you'll find that the newer
dobs are much improved in many ways... lighter, open back for better
cooling, fan options, 2"/1.25" Crayford focusers, digital setting
circles add-ons, easier collimation, smoother motions (after some tweaks
in many cases), etc.
You won't find one easily with a curved-spider, however, which was a
good feature of the Big Red Cannons.
And, as to your planetary imaging hopes... digicams or web cams at a
very low cost! will get you there and you won't need to buy an
equatorial mount at all (big $ savings). There are even free programs
for stacking images to produce stunning results.
Also, keep in mind that whatever scope you buy, it likely won't be the
last... so don't sweat decision too much, just buy a decent 8" or 10"
dob and get back into star gazing!
Let us know what you end up with... and post some early observation
reports!
