It is worth doing. I prefer the northern sky telescopically, but for
naked-eye and binocular viewing the southern sky is wonderful. There is
no difference in sky darkness between the north and south, although with
a lower population density you may find it easier to escape light
pollution in the south.
What I find most striking is not the different constellations, but the
unfamiliar orientations of those I am already familiar with.
