Question on Mirror Coating


I have to redo the coating on my 16 inch mirror.
There is this going urban legend according to which the enhanced
aluminum coating has a submicron roughness that degrades the image
contrast.
Since this coating is almost three times more expensive than the normal
one, I would just like to make sure that this urban legend is actually
a legend.
Does anybody know by first hand experince if these coatings yield
brighter images at the expense of contrast?
