LOTS of false color on Orion 100mm APO

Greetings----
A friend of mine bought an Orion 100MM APO about 4 months ago---personally,
I think the views stink. There is a ton of false color---as bad as any
typical achro and the field is crappy as you move from the center of view.
It appears to be in collimation (I mean collimated) as defocusing----in and
out---produces a very symmetrical circle---no rings, just a blurry round
disc. The mechanics----focuser especially---are junk too---image shift and
it's a crayford focuser! I have the 80mm APO from Orion and it's beautiful.
But the 100 seems like a waste of money. The 120ST I bought on Astromart
for $180 blows his "APO" away.
So what's up? Did he get a dud? The cell is adjustable, should I try to
adjust it? What would I look for? Could the problem all be in the
diagonal?
Doink.
