Invar is just another nickel-iron alloy, one with a low CTE. Nickel itself
can be an irritant to the skin of some individuals (it's no longer much used
in the plating of eyeglass frames, etc.). Appearance wise, Invar looks much
like a darkish, dull stainless steel. Perhaps there's another alloying
constituent that is "harmful".
