Well, maybe, but the image looks reasonably well exposed. I looked at
the wrong EXIF, BTW . . . the exposure was actually 1/800 at ISO 1600.
No wonder the thing looks noisy. I can't tell whether the lack of
sharpness is camera shake or poor focus I've uploaded the image
here:

I neglected to say in my original message that I was using an Olympus
Varimgni right angle finder attached to the camera. This gives a 2.5x
magnification of the viewfinder, and I got the focus as sharp as I
could. The view through the 20D viewfinder is horrible, though . . . I
wish the screen had at least a small spot of fine-grained matte.

Thanks for the tip on the Hartmann mask. I'll try it.
