I tried a similar setup to take a picture of a Lunar eclipse, and got
rather poor results as well:

The problem there was mirror flop. Since you have the 20D, you can
set the mirror lockup in the Custom Function menu (CF12 I believe).
Use that and wait for the mirror vibration to settle before the
shutter is released.
