>>>And Greg, I don't think Doink was referring to you. He and I were alluding to the less than one percent of contributors who find it necessary to denigrate the quality discussion taking place here by making flippant, arrogant, and or smug comments. The effects of these contributors will be to drive away people with genuine interest.

As a long time poster here, it is my experience that it is best to
ignore those who make "flippant, arrogant, or smug" comments.
Responding to them just gives them what they want, attention.
It has been my experience the best response is simply to stick to
original topic, ignore the trash, this helps keep the signal to noise
ratio as high as possible and avoids getting one mired down in a mud
wrestling contest. In such contests there are no winners, only
whiners.

In that vein, yes, M31 is not impressive from an urban back yard. One
only sees the very core and it is no more than a fuzz ball, complete
non-descript,.
But at a site where the skies are dark with a scope with a nice wide
field of view, M31 does indeed spread out across the sky for 2-3
degrees, M32 and M110 appear positioned as they are in the fancy
photos.
Galaxies from a back yard, even with a big scope they are not much to
look at. The bread and butter of the urban DSO observer are open and
globular clusters, planetary nebulas and a few other brighter nebulas.
