Problem: the autofocus works only with AF lenses, which the C90
definitely is not.

Yeah, I guess I missed that one <G>. However you can take pictures
"afocally" (a camera lens through an eyepiece) and then you can use the
autofocus feature of the camera to hopefully get better focus. This
also allows you to optimize the magnification.

As far as a tripod, I think the $25 Velbon is something you are going
to have to lose if you want decent photos. I do a fair amount of bird
photos and for that I use a Bogen 3040 with a 3047 with a TeleVue
Pronto mounted "sidesaddle." I think you need a tripod that is on
that order, something rated at 26 lbs.

I have been fortunate in that I have found some at good prices at
garage sales and swap meets, my 3040/3047 was $35, keep your eye open,
you might find something...
