480 MB? What are you planning to do with the scans? To be reproduced
at 8" x 10" a colour image need only take up about 25 MB,
uncompressed. Unless you're making a giant poster there's no need for
the kind of resolution you seem to be using. And unless you're
scanning top-quality, large-format transparencies there's nowhere
near that kind of real detail to be obtained from most photographic
images anyway; the film grain in ordinary slides or negatives limits
the amount of data they contain to an order of magnitude less than
what you're trying to extract.
