It is indeed true that I doubtless erred by allowing the full size
meniscus to be so strongly curved.

Otherwise, I should think my aims are not that bizarre.

What my goal is, is this:

To design a less-expensive alternative to the Schmidt-Cassegrain and
Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes in common use.

These are not the least expensive telescopes on the market per inch of
aperture, by any means.

My goal, therefore, was to eliminate the aspheric meniscus of the
Schmidt-Cassegrain, and the thick and steeply-curved meniscus of the
Maksutov-Cassegrain.

One could simply take a Field-Maksutov telescope, and put an optical
flat on the front. The Cape Newise telescope is a sealed-tube design
with an optical flat on the front.

I wanted the full-sized piece of glass in the front to earn its keep by
contributing to the correction of the design to some extent. The
Lurie-Houghton design intrigued me, but it doesn't seem to lend itself
to a Cassegrain with a small central obstruction.

Thus, the idea is to put a Field style corrector on the secondary, and
have a meniscus that is only slightly curved, and is relatively thin,
sealing the front. Some further work is needed, I admit.
