All non-Goto scopes will run off something considerably
smaller than a car battery.
The big power requirements are for dew heaters, Goto
scopes and the myriad electronic devices people take
in to the field nowadays.
Of the mounts I possess, my old Celestron fork mount
runs off a 9 volt battery, my Synta EQ-4 runs off D cells,
while my Losmandy G-11 runs off a 12 AH gel cell. This
is far larger than it actually needs (it draws 250 mA while
it's tracking), but is good for several nights away from
the power grid.
