Because once the kid gets a taste, he/she will want bigger and better,
you'll save a lot of money if you just buy Takahashi 150, Losmandy G-11
(with full auto control and DSCs) and every eyepiece that Televue makes.
Also, he'll need a laptop and a camera from SBIG. The Takahashi 78 should
suffice as a guide scope. That will be a nice grab and go setup for an 8
year old. For nights when it's really clear, he'll need a 30" Obsession. If
he wants to come visit you and show you the things he's learned, you can
have a 7" Questar in the closet. They don't take up much space and will
store nicely between visits. As for books, go to Amazon, search "astronomy",
buy all of them. He will eventually anyway.
When he turns 9 you can go to astromart.com and sell everything---including
the books. He'll be ready to upgrade by then.
