I like Dickinson's Nightwatch too, although other books like Turn Left
at Orion and Discover the Stars (Berry) are nice...
An older artifact is the The Stars book by HA Rey (author of Curious
George); it is dated, but gives a lot of useful and interesting
information written in a way a youngster can relate to...
I'm still using binocs, and recommend them for beginners. It's great to
just point and focus with a nice pair of 7x50s.
