Sky & Telescope also publishes another magazine, Night Sky, that's
oriented to beginners, including kids. It includes charts.

I'd also add the Orion XT6 dob to the short list. $259, and it's a
serious telescope. An 8 year-old could use it easily enough, though
it's probably too big to take outside without help.
