Thanks for all the inputs, folks! This has been so much fun, I don't
know why I waited all these years to get a telescope, especially since
I have been doing naked-eye observing since I was 7 or 8 years old. It
was the interest my 5-year old took in astronomy that finally got me to
spring for one. Well, better late than never, I suppose.
I am viewing from my dek off the back of the house, maybe 8-10' from
the porch door, although the telescope is pointed away from the house
and not over it. Maybe it is still not far enough to be not affected
by the thermal disturbances from the house. I'll do some experimenting
with this - there is a soccer field close by and maybe I can take the
scope there one of these days to at least verify if the proximity to
the house is what's behind the poor seeing.
I'll also contact the local astronomy club (Rose City Astronomers) to
see if I can have get a 2nd opinion on the collimation and the seeing
wtih a more experienced set of eyes.
