It seems (to me) the smog is much better now. In the 60s I often visited a friend living in Pasadena and my eyes burned during most visits. Now when I am up that way, it seems much less smoggy and my eyes never burn.

Of course it could just be that my eyes are 40 years older and less sensitive to everything .. including starlight ;-)
