Coating Failing?

As the storms have passed for now, I uncovered Babylon 8, it had been
covered with plastic sheeting and two sleeping bags. Scope itself was dry, I
tilted it up a bit to let the air flow. I looked down the tube and was not
happy with what I saw, almost 1/4th of the main mirror was black, as the air
flowed in and around, the black faded and now it looks almost normal but I
can still make out that area as if a ghost of whatever that was is still
there.
Could this be a sign that the coating which has been on the mirror for many
many years, is starting to fail?
