Thank you for the comprehensive pointer list - this is certainly enough
to get me (and my son) started.

Using Meade ETX125 PE, a Mac PB, Nikon D50 and currently xephem but will
look into others.

As this is not my main profession I'll have to be careful not to be
drawn into this black hole ;-)
