Isn't the actual image created by the objective, that which is visible on a
white *** of paper intercepting the focal plane of the objective?
I would think that this image, measured against the naked eye image on the
sky would define the native magnification of the objective.
A longer focal length telescope presents a larger image of an object at the
focal plane.
Of course one has to differentiate between the "image of an object" and the
"image as a field of view". A shorter focal length presenting a larger image
of the field of view, making the image of an object within that field appear
smaller.
