Yes, serious astrophotography can be an aspect of the hobby which is both costly and time-consuming (it seems as much as processing the images as capturing them!). I'm really impressed with the planetary images I see posted using webcams (ToUcam, Celestron NexImage, etc.).
I suspect (have not tried it) that a webcam could be brought to focus with a Newtonian Dob .. or inconjunction with a Barlow. I've often wondered if grabbing a set of images of Saturn or Jupiter with a webcam as the planet drifted in the FOV of a non-moving Dob and then stacking them with Registax or some such might be a practical way of imaging planets with a Dob. If so, if you have a computer at hand to capture the images, a $100 webcam (NexImage costs $100) could be an inexpensive entree to planetary astrophotography with an XT-8.
Perhaps someone who has tried this idea will comment.
