I am beginning to think about building my own Newtonian. Is there a fairly

No. And if it is your first effort it is unlikely to be a very good
mirror unless you get experienced help. On the other hand, if your
first mirror reflects a photon in any direction you'll be justifiably
proud of it and you may be hooked and on your way to that perfect
10-incher -- or larger.
I know a few amateur telescope makers, and it seems to me that ATM is
almost a separate hobby to amateur astronomy -- the two endeavours are
not always closely linked. That's /not/ to say that ATM is not a valid,
worthy, and rewarding hobby.
Also, can anyone recommend a good book on making a Newtonian?
Not I, but there are tons of books on the subject. Willman-Bell
<http://willbell.com/> and Sky & Telescope <http://tinyurl.com/a5hnx>
might be good starting points.
