Dan,
I signed up for a telescope making class at the local CC and went to
the first class last night. The Professor said that to make a 6" f/9
mirror would take between 50 to 80 hours. As others have stated,
savings don't occur unless the mirror is larger. He said that we could,
at the end, have a much better mirror than the mass produced kind. The
textbook used is 'How to Make a Telescope', Jean Texerau, second
edition. It's available on Amazon. He said we would learn a lot about
optics in his class. I personally wouldn't attempt this without
assistance from a knowledgeable person. I know that some astronomy
clubs offer classes and/or assistance. This could be another way to go.
Good luck.
Arnie
