Re: Grinding a mirror vs buying complete

I finished an 8" last year and wrote it up in this group a while back:

http://groups.google.com/group/sci.astro.amateur/browse_thread/thread/8db9552b044dd90/126f5c84101cb5aa?q=starburst+planet&rnum=1#126f5c84101cb5aa

I'll only echo what some folks here have said - it's not cheaper than a commercial mirror unless you're going for something in the 12" range, and I don't know if I'd start with something that big, especially if it's a fast focal ratio.

Still, my mirror is awfully good. I have teensy bit of astigmatism in it (which may be a function of the secondary or some problem in mounting), but it gives terrific views. The feeling of accomplishment is pretty worthy.

So I don't think you'll necessarily *** it up. I was on my own and working out of Texereau's book. Just keep bringing it back to a sphere between shots at figuring and you'll get there. Take your time. Keep it clean. Know that the making is part of the pleasure.

I am beginning to think about building my own Newtonian. Is there a fairly
major saving in grinding one's own mirror vs purchasing a completed mirror
from one of the top makers?

Also, can anyone recommend a good book on making a Newtonian?

Thanks,
