I'm in the market for a telescope. In general, I'm looking for a 12"
Dob, around $1000US.

I live in southwest Montana, a few miles south of Bozeman, and have
pretty dark (and clear) skies year around. I'll be using the 'scope
mainly in my backyard but also do observing sessions and simple star
lectures for Boy and Girl scout troops a few times a year.

First question: What do you think of telescopes.com as a place to
purchase a 'scope? Any other places you prefer?

Second question: What do you think of the Meade Lightbridge? How does
it compare, in your opinion, to the Orion Intelliscope? Looks to me
like the Orion would be easier to collimate but the Lightbridge would
be more portable.

If you think there are better dobs out there for the money I'm all
ears.

I currently have an old Edmund 6" reflector, which has been a good
friend for the last 30 years or so but I think it's time for an
upgrade. :>)

I bought an XT-12 Intelliscope to replace and XT-8 and ETX-90 that were
lost to Hurricane Katrina.

I am VERY PLEASED with the XT-12. I had a minor problem with the
Intelliscope that was due to my not tightening one bolt sufficiently --
tightened the bolt and the Intelliscope works perfectly.

The XT-12 -- and any other Dob of that size or larger -- is a bear to
wrassle around -- it's big. But, if you're planning to store it in the
garage and wheel it out, that's not a real problem.

Here is my article about my XT-12:

A hand truck (with pneumatic tires) from Home Depot, or similar hardware
store, will work wonders. Nothing else needed to have fun from here into
the forseeable future...
