My observation, however? Most schools do one hell of a job, with some
people choosing to denigrate teachers and schools because of a
particular political axe they have to grind. Teachers are one of those
groups that make fine targets because most Americans don't value them
very much and they are looked upon as essentially powerless (I am NOT
talking about you, of course, I know your dear wife is an educator).

Hi Rod.

If you have or had young kid's in the public school systems in the
past ten years, then you would have a different view. (IMHO)

I had numerous interactions with my kid's teachers over the fact
that they stated to me early on, that their job was to insure that
all the kid's understood others differences, and learned to get
along with each other. Which would be fine except..... that the
goal of schools is NOT to teach kid's to get along, their job IS
to teach them to be productive members of society. Something that
seemed alien to them.
I'll never forget a teacher telling me that I *had* to teach my son
that violence was never an accepted means to settle a difference.
When I explained that my son was right now watching US air assets
bombing Kosovo as per pres Clinton orders, and how was I going
to explain that, the teacher said "I never thought about that"
I told the teacher she needed take some time out to do some real thinking......

I have several really terrible stories of teachers blatantly telling
my kid's (and others) not to listen to the parents, because times
have changed, and *they* (us parents) dont understand.
And other instances of teachers getting children to spy on their parents. Or how they tell kid's, if their parents discipline them, to
call the police, etc......

When the schools start undermining a child/parent relationship, like
they do all the time here, I have a REAL problem with them !

These are the schools in Fairfax county VA

Yes, we DO have a real educational problem here, and IMHO, the
NEA is at the root of it.
