Hi Wil:

I don't usually reply to posts that take a _distinctly_ unfriendly tone
with me--life's too short and I prefer to save my bloodpressure and
hairline--I can see you spent some time with this, however, so I'll do
you the courtesy of a reply to some of your points (BTW, I do not
killfile people, even if I decline to reply to them ).

With all due respect, you need to spend some time in the classroom.

Thanks for the respect, but I spend time in the classroom every week,
year after year. Yes, in a university, but we do plenty of outreach to
the public schools as well, I know what goes on. Do you? How much time
do _you_ spend in the classroom?

180 days a year in a high school classroom. IMO, you still don't get the
same exposure even if you do have outreach and other programs from the
university level.

Ready to speak Chinese? Just let go of American principles that we've
held
dear for so many years?

Who says we will? The Spanish still speak Spanish though their empire
is long gone. Or is there something in particular you find distasteful
about Chinese?

The people, no. Their customs and beliefs, yes. People thought another
country was ok also until we were unexpectedly attacked.

So, flush the commode and let the stuff fall where it may. Don't bother
trying to come up with a better decontamination system because it will
happen anyway.

All the crying and teeth gnashing won't stop the march of history.
Nothing lasts forever, nothing can last forever. If it could Britannia
would still rule the waves, Spain woud be ready to do battle with her
over the possession of the world, and the Court of the Sun King would
still be the marvel of the world.

You can't just dismiss your morals and principles, IMO.

Yes, I feel a twinge of regret that we might have to someday (I didn't
say tomorrow) give up our position of the BEST, but history tells me it
_will_ happen and is inevitable. I guess my regret is symptomatic of
the American mindset...the only thing that matters is winning, winners
never quit...winning ain't just the best thing, it's the only thing.

I'll acknowledge that we have become an "instant gratification" type society
and have fallen far short of what we used to be, but it's still not too late
for remediation IF people are willing to make sacrifices.

But, logically, I know it will not last. The question is, will we be
able to step aside as gracefully as Britain did?

Learn Chinese now and be ready!

I've encouraged my daughters to learn Mandarin. Not because they'll be
required to speak it, but because knowing it will be a huge advantage
in the coming decades.

Until Communism becomes the way of life, then you might change your
tune.

OK, I can see what comes next..."Uncle Rod is a Dirty Red!!" I think
we'd better end it here for good.

No, but the possibility exists if you are not alert enough to what might be
happening. Many jobs have been lost and have now gone overseas. Layoffs
seem to be occurring every week in some form or another. Even optical
equipment is being imported and threatens American firms. You may not
notice these trends, and of course they wouldn't effect you at the
university level, but for anyone struggling in industry, the trends have
certainly been noticed.

You crave controversy, though?

No, practicality.

How about....

Which is better, Meade or Celestron? NOW THERE'S A CONTROVERSIAL
SUBJECT! ;-)

Since I own both scopes, I can't decide one way or the other. I like them
both.

Wil
