Thanks to everyone who responded, I appreciate the help.

I remember seeing a depiction of Herschel observing through one of his big
reflectors where the eyepiece was set inside the front of the tube and at
the bottom. Though he was primarily a "wide field" type his high power views
must have been atrocious with that instrument.
