You can pretty much tell who they are, too: They are the ones talking
about the kit, rather than using it. Don't know about other clubs, but
when I go out to the Los Angeles Astronomical Society's dark sky site,
it's pretty darned quiet, with most of the chatter being on the order of
"Where's NGC 7619 relative to that field star?"
Astronomy, like chess benefitted immensely in the 60's and 70's from the
proxy cold war in space and over the chess board. What we really need to
get the public interested again is a decent sized naked eye comet!
Don't underestimate the influence of parents. When the parents are
interested in it, the kids will most likely be interested in it. Not to
say there aren't lots of exceptions, but I bet the correlation is pretty
high.
