I also agree with the 8-inch SCT, and would add that the Orion 150mm Maksutov is
also a good telescope. A friend of mine compared the views against his 8-inch
SCT, and said the 127mm version gave sharper and more contrasty views, enabling
him to see almost everything he saw in the 8-inch SCT to almost the same degree
of details and such, even though the images were fainter. I highly recommend
both to those looking at any SCT up to 8-inches.
Some years ago I had some friends observing Mars through a 8" SC from
Meade. The views were marvelous. I would have rated it superb. We had
also my Meade ETX 105 UHTC at the site. Okay, it was no 150mm or 127mm
Maksutov but it was not capable to hold water.
I agree if the original poster is after a telescope for planetary
observing he will have to make a delicate decision since there are a
lot of SC scopes out there who do not live to their advertised
standards.
However, let me rephrase: my best views of Saturn happend through a
35cm reflecting telescope. I had my 150mm Maksutov from INTES site by
site, but the 14" views were outstanding compared to the 150mm
Maksutov.
But still: a 6" maksutov is a very serious planetary performer and it a
lot easier to transport a 6" Makstov than a 5" apo.
But money is no reason: The original poster will be well off with a 1
meter reflecting semi-professional scope at a remote Texanian site. Or
the Pic du Midi could be a good place to observe with. It is for the
serious gentleman who doesn't like light pollution.
