I have of all my portable battery operated devices: I want to be able to
carry along spare batteries, preferably of standard types, but at
least easily exchangeable out in the field, so I can exchange the
battery whenever it runs out of power. The lack of this capabilty I
consider a fundamental design flaw of the Ipod)

The Li ion battery for my 20 gig iPod will last about 10-12 hours.
That's more than enough for my purposes, since, with an adapter cable,
I can run or recharge my iPod from any auto cigarette lighter (or field
power tank).

I think it's nice not to have to carry a field power tank with you whenever
you are away from your home, your work, and your vehicle. But maybe that
rarely happens to you? To me it happens quite frequently.

There's a huge number of aftermarket add-ons for iPods, less so for
other brands of MP3 players. There exist external battery packs for
iPods that can power them through the dock connector, typically from AA
cells. For iPod reviews in general, go to:

Yeah, I am looking at ipod clones, now after my son
dumped 13 gig's of mp3's on my HD.

I'm like you, it must have a removable rechargeable battery.

The battery in the player must be removable, but not necessarily
rechargeable. If the player contains a non-rechargeable standard
battery when you buy it (not uncommon), it's easy to find a
rechargeable battery with the same dimensions with which you can
replace it. Plus some extra recharegeable batteries, so you can
replace it out in the field.

Don't forget that Ni-cads and NIMH rechargeable cells put out less
voltage than alkaline cells. Gotta read the specs and find out whether
your player (or add-on battery pack for iPods and other players with
internal batteries) will work with rechargeables or not.

I've tested NiMH cells on a few portable players which came with a
removable but non-rechargeable standard battery, and so far they all
worked with NiMH cells.
