I posted a year or so back that I was saving money to buy my very first
"new" telescope. Unfortunately life and other things has kept me from being
able to hang onto what money I could save. I'm now in a position that I have
$500 dollars to spend on a scope and was wondering what you all would
recommend as my first scope. I have a basic understanding of the different
types and how they work. I want to be able to see the Planets, Nebulae,
Constellations, and most things that are marked on a Planeshpere. I also
want a scope that I can setup and take down easily and be able to show other
people what can be seen with a Good, Basic Scope.
In the past I had been leaning towards Cassegrains and someone once
recommended a Refractor. I want to be able to make the best buy for the
money that I have as this may be the only scope I have for quite some time.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
In that price range, and with what you say above, I would recommend a Dobsonian .. something on the order of the XT-8 or XT-8i shown here:

Easy to set up, pretty easy to move around and even transportable enough to take to remote viewing sites.
