Well, as a happy 300D owner, I don't have any experience with the 350 so I really can't give you a comparison rundown. At the time I bought, the 350 was new and on the high side of the price range, and the 300's were starting to drop in price.

The 300D with the firmware hack gives good enough results for what you (and I) want to do, but let your price and warranty needs guide you. No reason not to get a 350, if the package deal is a good value (and $650 is a pretty good deal if you can find it for that).

Not to throw yet another monkey wrench into this, but the fact is after replacing a dead (user) modded 300D that I bought used, with a used unmodded version, I decided to sell the unmodded one when I got an opportunity to get a used modded by Hutech Type 1 filter model at a very good price. I already had an XNite CC-1 filter for day use with the standard lens to compensate for the mod, and I picked up a 2" IDAS IR block filter to play with for imaging objects that don't benefit from the IR bandpass. Not really sure what to expect with that, but I figured it would reduce any unwanted red response, where H-alpha isn't a significant component, like with reflection nebula, and the moon. That may be a waste in the end, but I thought it might be worth try. I can of course use the filter with my webcam for planet imaging, so no loss.
