I think the answer to that is yep, pretty much.
I just took a look at the others you listed and they're all permanent lens systems (consumer digital). The (pro-sumer) digital SLRs those companies offer are also around $800 for the low end models at 8MP.
That's why I went with a used 300D. :-)
The non SLR style cameras can only be used afocally. If all you want is a family photo camera, then the consumer cameras are fine, but for anything beyond that you need a pro-sumer. Thankfully they are making these for us hobbyists. Otherwise we'd have to bite the bullet and get a professional cla$$ camera.
In the end, if you wanna play, you gotta pay. ;-)
I still say a 12 month to 18 month old 300D is a good value at around $400. However, after a Google search, I see that the 350XT can be had for as little as $650 after rebate.
