The head of my mount has a slight slope to it, so I have to use the three
flat areas of the mount, where the legs join to the mount.
I set an 8 inch level on two of the flat leg areas. Level the tripod using
those two legs. Then I put the level on the third leg flat area and on one
of the first two original leg mounts. Use this third leg to level the
mount..
If done right, putting the level on the new leg and the other original leg
mount, they should now be level.
I usually have to do it twice and things are fine. Total time takes no more
than a minute or so.
I guess the job is to find a flat spot on the mount which you think is
supposed to be horizontal. Mine happens to be where the legs connect to the
mount.

When I want to level the tripod on my Meade 4500, I use a small bubble
leveler which is about the size of a fountain pen. Get them at the
hardware store for 3 to 5 dollars.
What part of the tripod do you hold this level against ?
I rest the level on the base of the head of the mount just above where
each
of the three legs joins it.
