16 bits/component free Windows image processing apps?

Hi,
usually I do the final touching for stacked photos on Cinepaint at
Linux, but due to a kitchen repair I'll be living elsewhere
temporarily and have only frequent local access to a Windows 2000
installation. So, the question is, after I've stacked etc. an image
with Iris, I'd like to perform some levels/curves adjustments to the
images while still in 16 bits per component format and only then
convert to 8 bits per component for WWW purposes. The most recent
version of the Photoshop I have is Photoshop Elements 2, which does
not appear to support more than 8 bits per component.
So, the question is, what would be a comfortable free image processing
application for Windows? I'm not that interested for paying, because
the situation is pretty much temporary and in a week or two I'll be no
longer actively needing Windows applications for these purposes
anymore. (Yeah, I could set up VNC or install an X server inside
windows for GUI remote access of Cinepaint, but I suppose there are
native Windows solutions for my needs...)
.
