I guess by "grainy" you mean "noisy". Well, I sure can disagree with
you. It looks pretty smooth to me- and you have to consider that a high
resolution image made from a low orbit requires a short exposure to
avoid motion blur. There's always going to be some tradeoff between
resolution and S/N.
One nice thing JPL does is release most of their images in TIFF format,
not just JPEG. I wish ESA did the same- it's a lot harder with a JPEG to
tell what's in the original data. Even so, there are some remarkable
images on the SMART-1 mission pages.
