I guess by "grainy" you mean "noisy". Well, I sure can disagree with
you. It looks pretty smooth to me- and you have to consider that a high
resolution image made from a low orbit requires a short exposure to
avoid motion blur. There's always going to be some tradeoff between
resolution and S/N.
The picture seems to have been heavily processed--notice the burned-out portions of the crater walls on the lower left. Is it also possible that the camera has a very limited depth of field so that the outer portions of an image of the curved surface are slightly out of focus?
